Osteo + essential services during COVID-19 + reflections during this pandemic

Firstly, I wanted to send best wishes to everyone during this difficult time. I know many people are doing it tough at the moment, and the uncertainty surrounding the health impacts of this virus, alongside the economic and social impacts isn’t helping. Given that Osteopathy is on the list of essential services, we remain open to assist the public through this period. This availability has been possible, primarily, due to Rebecca and her reception team running the centre, who have been incredibly supportive. So I would like to say a big thanks to them for keeping the doors open and making patients and staff feel safe by adhering to the current strict distancing, hygiene and cleaning guidelines. For many of us, this pandemic has been a time of stress, as well as a time for reflection. During this period of isolation and reduced clinic hours, I have continued my PhD studies, course writing, working on the medical technology side of things, and also reflecting more broadly on life and why I chose Osteopathy as my profession and the direct and indirect benefits of Osteopathic care for patients. My decision was based on my own experience of treatment and education benefits I received as a patient following a significant motor vehicle accident and then wanting to help others in the same way. For me, this extended beyond just treating “sore spots”. As my Osteopath pointed out, there are almost always broader health considerations, and our five years of university training helps us identify many of them, and refer appropriately. Many of these considerations lie outside the direct scope of practice for Osteos in Australia, which is why I enjoy working as part of a multi-disciplinary team and referring to GPs and other allied health professionals for direct management. Conversely, I also enjoy helping patients referred by their GP to me under the Allied Health team care plan, for musculoskeletal considerations in chronic disease management, such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease. As an example, the goals of referral to me has been to assist patients directly with mobility and physical capacity so that they may then go on to participate in supervised exercise programs to improve overall wellness. These referrals always strike me as very forward-thinking, holistic patient-centric and practical medical management strategies.This current pandemic has highlighted the importance of the interrelationship between the body’s systems, that is, “systems relying on other systems” to perform optimally (which is a fundamental Osteopathic principle and one which many other health professions are advocating). Scientists and medical experts are warning that conditions that weaken the immune system, such as cardiovascular disease, chronic respiratory disease, diabetes, and cancer, are leaving patients more vulnerable to this disease. So, while social distancing remains the critical weapon in the battle against the COVID-19 virus, each of us must also ensure that we stay healthy and actively work on sensible and practical wellness strategies. At a time where attention, quite rightly, is focused on the virus, there are many health experts across different fields that are reminding us that the health of the host (us!) is also of vital importance. This time of social distancing may be an opportunity for all of us to take stock of our overall wellness, not just the absence of disease. It is important to recognise the acute effects of this virus, as well as any chronic health implications. Chronic health implications may include mental health stresses with financial pressures and personal relationships under strain, perhaps for quite some time to come. Having strategies in place to assist people will be vital.
